These are not in alphabetical order. |
Whilst the majority of these case histories
are taken from the actual Calendar of Felons, which are held at
York Library, some are donated by members from their own research
notes. These members' notes are in green.

alias John SOWLEY aged 50 years Received 1st June 1826 Brought before the Court 8th July 1826 "Charged upon the oath of Charles HORNBY of Osmertherly (sic) in the North Riding Innkeeper with having on the 12th day of May last, feloniously stolen, taken and carried away from and out of the dwelling house of him the said Charles HORNBY aforesaid sundry articles to wit ten yards of blue cloth and two brass candlesticks of the value of ten shillings the property of the said Charles HORNBY" verdict: Guilty. Judgement of death entered on record. Reprieved. |

aged 20 years. Received February 3rd 1845 Brought before the Court 8th March 1845 "Charged with Thomas KITCHINGMAN on the 25th January at Leeds in the Riding aforesaid feloniously stolen 30 pounds weight of mustard the property of Thomas WILSON and Charles BEARDSHAW" verdict: Guilty of larceny. Imprisoned and kept to hard labour in House of Correction at Wakefield for eight calendar months. |

aged 25 years and Elizabeth BEEDHAM aged 27 years. Received 24 th February 1849 Brought before the Court 3rd March 1849. "Charged for that they on the 20th February last at the Borough of Leeds in the West Riding did feloniously and violently assault John BROADBENT and steal from his person one sovereign, ten shillings and sixpence, his property" verdict on Elizabeth Ann SOWREY. Guilty of robbery together with another and attended with personal violence. To be severally imprisoned in the House of Correction for two years. verdict on Elizabeth BEEDHAM. to be severally transported beyond the seas for ten years. |

| RAPER | 9 July 1785 Henry RAPER, late of the Parish of Ripon in the County of York, Labourer, committed the 24th Day of May, 1785, a Bill of Indictment having been preferred and found against him at the Assizes held for the County of York on Saturday the 6th Day of March, 1784, for a Misdemeanor, to which Indictment he hath not yet Appeared or Pleaded; he also having refused to find sufficient Sureties to be Bound with him in a Recognizance for his personal Appearance at the next Assizes to be held for the County of York to answer the said Indictment. |

at Upleatham in the North Riding of Yorkshire in the forenoon
of the 4th day of November instant and stealing thereout Sundry
Bank of England and other notes of the value of two pounds and
five shillings and in current money of England to the amount of
fifty shillings and upwards the property of the said Thomas Lord
DUNDAS. |

of worsted stuff, the property of one Charles TETLEY. |

as a witness on the trial of one John EARNSHAW.

feloniously to utter the same. Verdict Guilty of a misdemeanour, in having in his possession counterfeit silver coin, - To be imprisoned and kept to hard labour in the said House of Correction at Wakefield, for two years. (Only one-year sentence for John DEWHIRST). |

LINDLEY David 32yrs 10 March 1810 (sentenced
to death and then reprieved) Gaol Delivery List: 10 March 1810 (prisoner 21) David LINDLEY, committed the 30th day of January, 1810, charged upon oath with feloniously shooting at Matthew NICHOLSON, in the parish of Harewood, in the West-riding, on the 30th day of January instant. Found guilty and sentenced to death. DL was reprieved (the the help of the family of the Earl of Harewood) and sentenced to life imprisonment. The General Gaol Delivery listing the reprieve states "Guilty of wilfully, maliciously, and feloniously pointing a gun, loaded with gunpowder and leaden shot, at and against Matthew NICHOLSON, and by drawing the trigger thereof, attempting to to discharge the same gun, at and against his person, with intent, by means thereof, to kill and murder him." |
