Everything relating to a specific place in the United Kingdom has been colour coded to make searching easier. There is a guide on the wall and colour codes are shown in the catalogue too.

To ensure all place names are included references have been added from any main entry covering multiple places. References are in italics.
 
The catalogue tells you whether the item is a book, a booklet, a magazine, a paper copy, kept in a loose leaf binder, microfiche or film, cd-rom  or floppy disc so that you know where to find it. It also tells you how many copies are held.
 

The example below shows that there is a full set of the York Marriage Index on microfiche, three different volumes in book format and two full copies on cd-rom. The microfiche and the cd-rom boxes will have BLUE labels and the books will be in the BLUE section on the shelves.
